This is a stunning Japanese Indigo stripe, reminiscent of authentic Wabash fabric but improved. Wabash was traditionally used for workwear in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly by US railroad employees. Learning about the details of Wabash fabric is challenging, but our research suggests it was originally made in one of two ways: 1) using a block print and starch-based "resist" on undyed fabric, or 2) dyeing the fabric and then printing the pattern with a mildly acidic solution using copper rollers. One of the most well-known Wabash fabric companies in America was J.L. Stifel & sons, established in West Virginia in 1835. Their product, "Indigo Wabash Stripe," featured a variety of dots, triangles, and diamonds. Several examples can be found in "King of Vintage vol 3" by Rin Tanaka.
